This is the phase in which the person can loose up to 6 kg of weight. The sudden elimination of the carbohydrates from the diet can lead to weight loss. Excess Fats and animal proteins should also be avoided as it can also lead to cancer and heart problems. The vegetarians can replace the meat in the first phase with soya and pulses.

The inclusion of the carbohydrates slowly in the diet takes place in the second phase of South Beach Diet. Chocolate wine, cereals, bread, rice, pasta and fruits can be slowly inculcated now. This phase is stretched to the time the person does reach the desired weight. The person is expected lose one kg every week in the second phase. The third phase of South Beach Diet includes normal foods in controlled quantities for maintaining the weight lost by the person.
