Although men’s fashion does not usually change as drastically as women’s fashion, the present preoccupation of the modern male in his physical looks has elevated men’s fashion into a multi-million dollar industry. Although most male fashion trends are just an extension of previous years’ trends, every season new elements are introduced that guide men on what men’s fashion might look like in the current year. Here are some ideas on what men’s fashion might look like for summer 2012:

Tailoring & Styling of Trousers
Rolled up trouser hem seems to be the most prevalent trend in trouser styling for the coming summer season. Rolled up hem by about an inch or more above the shoes with or without socks dominated the runways for the Spring/ Summer 2012 Milan collections of many Italian designer houses. Another trend that stood out is the tailoring and cut of trousers. Designers for male fashion are giving more emphasis on cuts and styles that compliment an athletic male physique.. Guys who haven’t been doing much physical activities lately better hit the gym now to get their bodies ready for this current trend.

Marriage or combination of styles
If in the past the trend was for either a minimalist look or bolder prints, for the coming seasons, designers are proposing a marriage or combination of these two styles to create a one-of-a-kind look. Seen on the runway was a merger of styles, geometric or animal prints for the pants or trousers and plain or minimalist look for the top or vice versa.

Fusion of traditional and classic styles
2012 will see the resurgence of classic styles, colors and cuts. White will remain as a mainstay but with a surprising pop of vivid colors now and then. Customary tan shoes may have shoelaces in electric blue or lemon yellow or cherry red chukkas for a touch of flair and drama are just two examples of this trend. Slim fit trousers will be a big hit next season but so are the more traditional suits in conventional fabrics such as linen, tweed or silk.

Blazers and denims
The unlined and unstructured jacket or blazer will be a hot trend for spring so is denim blazer or jacket and denim shirts. Denim jackets will come with structure and precision fit as well as a lot of detailing. The unstructured blazer or jacket will make a guy smart, fashionable and sweat-free during the season.

John Galliano Spring 2012 Collection for Men

The John Galliano spring 2012 menswear collection sans John Gallano is a lovely blend of exceedingly tailored look and off-the-wall styles for men. This is thanks to Bill Gayten who has been credited with the John Galliano line of menswear taking over from the disgraced Galliano in the show with his label. The collection focused on three distinctive styles; the gentleman from the south look, robes, the military look and the preppy look. It was a very colorful yet versatile collection.

The dramatic shadow of John Galliano though was still evident in the early pieces of layered striped and checked tailoring, jaunty hats with feathers, drop crotch trousers, and military jackets. The rebel touch came in the form of guys wearing suit jackets worn with scarf and waistcoats sans shirt, very Galliano in style.

As the show progressed, Bill Gayten’s flair was very much in evidence with the entry of guys in round faux nerdy glasses wearing very wearable summer preppy outfits with stripe knitted ties, dashing bow ties and a collection of colorful creative tank tops. Hats that complement the outfits were a perfect touch. the rebel touch came in the form of guys wearing suit jackets worn with scarf and waistcoats sans shirt.

Evening wear came in a combination of tailored or tux jackets, over bare chests and sprayed – on tight black pants and the military jackets with black ties and tight black satin pants some with ornate detailing and strategically placed patch work making a plain military jacket super fashionable.

Of course underwear was very much part of the John Galliano spring 2012 collection. Models strut and showed their wares in silk boxer shorts paired with silk pyjama bottoms or topped with flowing silk robes or unstructured and unlined jackets.

The show was called the “Big Splash” and was advertised as inspired by the pulsating London Pop Art Scene of the 60s. It successfully established that the Galliano label lives and will thrive even without its founder.

You see them all around you so you think it’s okay without realizing that you are hurting the sensibilities of those who are more savvy. Let me innumerate some of it here so that you can avoid it or if you’re already guilty of it , then stop doing it. Here are some common fashion mistakes men make:

Dress shoes with white socks

Wearing white socks with dress shoes may have been an eccentric fashion statement in the 90s but in the 21st century this is considered tacky and one of the worst common fashion mistake that men makes. Dress shoes should always be matched with wool or cotton dress socks in dark colors – blue, black, brown or gray. Reserve your white socks for your track suit and tennis shoes.

Incorrect way of buttoning a blazer or suit coat

You may have the most fashionable suit but if the buttons are not fastened right you might look like a trussed sausage. The suit coat will look ill fitting and pulled and stretched in the most gauche direction, so be careful how you fasten the buttons of your coat or jacket. A two-button suit should have only the top button fastened while with a three –button coat, you have the option of fastening the 1st and 2nd buttons from the top or just the middle button. If you’re wearing a double-breasted suit, fasten all the buttons. Regardless of the type of coat you’re wearing, make sure you unfasten the buttons when you sit down.

Extra-large clothes

Extra-large clothes or clothes that are too big for you will make you look like you are in borrowed togs and another common fashion mistake men make.
