The John Galliano spring 2012 menswear collection sans John Gallano is a lovely blend of exceedingly tailored look and off-the-wall styles for men. This is thanks to Bill Gayten who has been credited with the John Galliano line of menswear taking over from the disgraced Galliano in the show with his label. The collection focused on three distinctive styles; the gentleman from the south look, robes, the military look and the preppy look. It was a very colorful yet versatile collection.
The dramatic shadow of John Galliano though was still evident in the early pieces of layered striped and checked tailoring, jaunty hats with feathers, drop crotch trousers, and military jackets. The rebel touch came in the form of guys wearing suit jackets worn with scarf and waistcoats sans shirt, very Galliano in style.
As the show progressed, Bill Gayten’s flair was very much in evidence with the entry of guys in round faux nerdy glasses wearing very wearable summer preppy outfits with stripe knitted ties, dashing bow ties and a collection of colorful creative tank tops. Hats that complement the outfits were a perfect touch. the rebel touch came in the form of guys wearing suit jackets worn with scarf and waistcoats sans shirt.
Evening wear came in a combination of tailored or tux jackets, over bare chests and sprayed – on tight black pants and the military jackets with black ties and tight black satin pants some with ornate detailing and strategically placed patch work making a plain military jacket super fashionable.
Of course underwear was very much part of the John Galliano spring 2012 collection. Models strut and showed their wares in silk boxer shorts paired with silk pyjama bottoms or topped with flowing silk robes or unstructured and unlined jackets.
The show was called the “Big Splash” and was advertised as inspired by the pulsating London Pop Art Scene of the 60s. It successfully established that the Galliano label lives and will thrive even without its founder.
